Skimming........................................................... Skimming is the application of a finish coat to a wall or ceiling. Its usually applied in 2 coats to (approx 3-4mm in total) but in one setting and is then troweled smooth and ready for sealing and painting. Skim coats can be applied to most surfaces where a good finish is required and the back ground is sound. Preparation will usually be involved to ensure the skim sticks to the surface if applying to an old wall, artex or painted surface. The procedure is relatively quick and dries in approximately 2-4 days depending on conditions. It is particularly good for old walls where filling and sanding would not be economical and sufficient for a good finish and also is excellent for smoothing over artexed ceilings and walls.

Float and set........................................................
This is the application of 2-coat plaster work (wet plastering) there are many different base coat products including: bonding coat, hardwall, sand and cement and many more that can be used depending on the situation. This would normally be used on block work or brick walls and is applied approx 10-15mm thick for the first coat and 3-4mm skim on top. The backing or base coat is ruled off with a straight edge, allowed to dry and then finished with a skim coat that can be painted. In some cases the base coat will need to be left over night to dry before applying the skim coat.
Dot and dab..........................................................
Dot and dab is an alternative to float and set and involves sticking sheets of plasterboard to a wall and then skimming smooth. It can be a much quicker process to float and set sometimes as it can be skimmed sooner and drying times are shorter.
Rendering.............................................................
Rendering is the application of sand and cement on to exterior walls. It again is usually a 2-coat process 10-20mm which consists of a scratch coat first which would be left over night to dry after being scored to give a key for the top coat. The top coat is then applied ruled off, floated with plastic trowels then sponged to a consistent finish. The drying process can sometimes be lengthy depending on conditions but usually around 4 weeks before painting.
Overboarding........................................................
This process would be used for example when an artexed of old lathe and plaster ceiling can not be skimmed on due to being un-sound. Plasterboard sheets are fixed through the existing ceiling in to the ceiling joists which then provides a fresh plasterboard surface to skim. It can be particularly useful as an alternative to pulling a ceiling down saving time, mess and money.
